The Fourth Veggie in the Flames

Marshall and I watched a Veggie Tales DVD the other day from twenty years ago. It was just as surprisingly violent as the current ones, or the Bible itself. But, I found Mother God there.

In this one, Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego are played by Larry the Cucumber, Tom the Tomato, and Lil’ Asparagus. They have two temptations in their jobs at a chocolate bunny factory. One is to eat too many chocolate bunnies when the boss gives them carte blanche, and the other is to sing the boss’s Worship the Bunny song.

In both cases, it is Lil’ Asparagus’ mother who plays the voice of God. She sings a song reminding him that if he remembers her words, she’ll always be near him even if she is not physically near. We see her with her tall Asparagus hair and big pearl beads, rocking Li’l Baby Asparagus as she sings in her lovely voice.

Of course, when the trio of veggies refuse to sing the Bunny worship song, they get thrown into the fiery furnace.

And then we see a Fourth Veggie in the flames, which do not touch them.

Can a woman forget her nursing child,

Or show no compassion for the child of her womb?

Even these may forget,

Yet I will not forget you.
